Our Mission Statement
The Hingham Pride Project works to increase LGBTQ+ visibility in Hingham and raise funds for organizations that provide community programs and activities for LGBTQ+ youth.
We know that LGBTQ+ people and their allies exist in all corners of town. Our mission is to help them show their pride and show the world that Hingham is a place of acceptance, inclusion and love.
How we Started and Where we are going
The Hingham Pride Project is full steam ahead. The project sprang from an idea our founder shared initially on Hingham Pinboard Facebook group. Immediately, 11 people volunteered to help get the project off the ground. The members met and started developing a plan to provide Philadelphia-style Pride flags to everyone in Hingham who wants one for free for the month of June. Through a fundraising launch party and generous donations, the Hingham Pride Project is raising enough money to provide all these flags for free. We are also providing window clings to businesses or people who can’t have a flag on their property. The team believes the flags will help in two ways. First, the visual display will show people in the community who feel their sexual orientation or gender identity is not supported, that they are supported, loved, and have people to turn to in a time of need.
Second, the project will raise money to support LGBTQ+ issues in the community. The statistics regarding suicide and our LGBTQ+ youth are scary. According to the CDC, LGBTQ+ youth seriously contemplate suicide at almost three times the rate of heterosexual youth and are almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to heterosexual youth. The organizers of Hingham Pride Project are actively engaging with LGBTQ+ youth, including Hingham High School Gender, Sexuality, and Allies, and with their help are planning programs with young people for later in the year. The Hingham Pride Project would like to thank all their amazing volunteers for their hard work so far. There is more work to be done and we are always looking for help and donations. People from as far away as Hingham, England are watching this organization and have been requesting flags. While the Project can’t provide them right now, it is the dream of the organization to be able to spread this love as far as it will go.
